TL; DR: Essentially, the results of a 1967 study by Dr. Mehrabian at UCLA has been oversimplified and misrepresented in later articles, textbooks, and media. The study focused on communication of emotions and feelings, and was not in any way stating that word choice only conveys 7% of a message’s meaning.
